Recently I’ve been noticing an alarming trend: that of people who are not awesome – and by that I mean they are dull in appearance, not particularly exciting etc – being labelled as AWESOME. Am I the only person who sees this as the social injustice that it so clearly is? The whole point of being called awesome is that you are part of a small but elite group. A while ago, a friend of mine set me a very specific challenge: “I want you to do something awesome and record it for a week straight,” he said, “and if you achieve this I will give you twenty pounds.” He then set out a list of things which would be considered awesome. There was a time when the word AWESOME was only for people who said “Rad” and “Dude!”. Or at least they were the only people who wanted anything to do with it; everyone else wanted it as far away from them as was physically possible. Nowadays, though, the word has been adopted by pretty much everyone, from fuel storage workers to dentists and everyone in between.
