Managing to earn yourself the tag of ‘awesome’ can often come across as being a pretty tall order. However, it is actually a whole lot easier than you would first think. In fact, I would go as far as saying that just about anyone on the planet is perfectly capable of attaining his/her own level of ‘awesomeness’. You see, when it comes to being ‘awesome’, there is a very popular misconception that will often get in the way… And it is this – many people think that being genuinely ‘awesome’ is dependent on being super-skilled at something that looks super-duper impressive; things like freestyle BMX, guitar playing or uber cool graffiti spraying for example…

However (if you hadn’t already guessed it), that is simply not the case at all! And this is purely because you can actually be ‘awesome'at anything– irrespective of how much ‘street cred'it may have attached to it!!! Well, ignoring your family just to earn money does not make sense. It is not correct on the part of the individual who heads the family to ignore the needs and requirements of the same. Never make the excuse that you are too busy to take care of your family. If you are too busy for this task, then chances are high that you are too busy to live and you might as well die. So, what steps should you take to become awesome?

Here we go, no more of this novelty awesome malarkey – today is all about domestic awesome! That’s right, making everyday things totally awesome around the home. Me? I’m a bit of an expert on this, so don’t think that you’re on your own here. I have been where you are now, and I am here to help you get more awesome while doing your domestic tasks!

1) Get yourself some decent headphones for hoovering. I’m talking those wrap-around puppies which fill your head with sound and totally drown-out the noise of the hoover. Brilliant. If you like, plaster them in colour graphics – magazine pages if you like – and this’ll make them look cool too. Now how’s that when the postman comes to the door? Pretty good me thinks.

Why does making the tea have to be so mundane?

2) Funky slippers are a must and you know it: get rid of those boring rubbish dull slippers and slip into some coll ones with colour. If you like, put some cloths underneath them and mop the floor at the same time. You get funky, the floor gets nice and clean. Yes!

3) Make cleaning the windows into a fun and cool thing to do by dancing to the beat of music. I suggest some dance music or, if you’re tired from all that housework, something slower and more soothing. Either way this increases the fun factor by at least 100%, don’t you worry my domestic god or goddess friend!

4) Why does making the tea have to be so mundane? I suggest making the whole process into a kind of ballet dance. Put a twist in on the way to the fridge and another one in before you pour. Before you know it you’ll be feeling a whole lot more fun and that…that’s got to put a smile on your face! It’s got to put you at the fore-front of cutting-edge housecleaning, surely?

It’s not often that someone will sing the praises of allergies. If you suffer from one, you’ll know how miserable they can make you. Whether a sip of milk makes you fart or the touch of latex gloves brings you out in an impressively colourful rash, it’s not something that people often wish that they suffered from. I’m a hay fever sufferer myself, and while everyone else is enjoying the approach of summer and planning days out in the warm weather, I’m dosing myself up with antihistamines and studiously avoiding anything green.

My hay fever has, in recent years, extended to dust and some animal hair. This is where the awesome part comes in. My friend recently got herself a hideous cat from some animal shelter – very altruistic, but I’m sure the shelter were more than happy to see the back of this furry devil. She scratches, bites, hisses and is generally a bitch to everyone, apart from my friend who won’t have a word said against her cute little kitty, and insists that we all give the furball a hello cuddle when we go round to visit. She even insisted she had to bring the damn thing round to my house when she came over for dinner as “Sooty couldn’t be alone for so long”.

How sad, then, that I can go nowhere near adorable little Sooty without sneezing violently for several minutes, followed by a severe swelling around the eyes? OK, I may have exaggerated my symptoms (and changed the name of the cat to protect my friend’s feelings!) but she was trying to invite Sooty to a human dinner party for heaven’s sake? I think in that situation, a few overt-the-top sniffs and sneezes are forgivable. So, thanks goodness for animal allergies and their ability to keep pets away from the dinner table!

Here are some people that even though being geeks are among the most successful businessmen the world has ever seen:

• Bill Gates – creator of Microsoft (the largest software corporation in the world), one of the richest man ever lived and one of the creators of the modern times. His innovations and technology developments made him the most mentioned geek ever.
• Steve Jobs – creator of Apple – one of the most valued companies in the world. Even though retiring from the leadership position, Jobs remains an inspiring example of how cool a geek can actually be.
• Mark Zuckerberg – the creator of Facebook. From designer jewellery to amazing sport cars, you can all find it on the social network this guy created. Thanks to him, many of us became better people with more opportunities.

So mentioning these people really proves one fact – being a geek is no longer something to be hiding from the others. It is now an advantage. Every company, every business is now going digital and geeks are the people to maintain the peace in the business environment by applying their knowledge and expertise in computing, technologies and so on. So next time you see the guy with the glasses holding a big “Programming: Advanced Level” book, think about these great people that used to be called geeks – aren’t they awesome!

Here it is, straight in your face: I’m a dog person and I’d take a dog over a cat any day. Here are a few reasons for this, for all the people who have decided not to curse me and click away to read something else:

1) Dogs are loyal: I realise this reason gets wheeled out each and every time there is a cat/dig dispute, but that’s because it really is a fact. For example, what would the infamous TV show Lassie have been like if the dog had been a cat? I’ll tell you: it wouldn’t have got past the first episode, because the cat would have left the poor man to die in that mine-shaft!

She runs fast, she loves a game of ball and she’s amazingly good at sleeping

2) Dogs will attack someone with force if they enter your home at night: the down-side of that, of course, is the fact that it might just be your girlfriend coming home later…

3) Dogs like affection, and humans like to give them affection. Cats don’t give anything back. You call that tail around your leg affection? Forget about it!

Of all the awesome dogs out there, one, for me, reigns supreme. That dog is the greyhound. Here’s how we came to get one and how she turned out to be thoroughly awesome.

Deborah was the only dog at the dog-home who made eye-contact with us. The other dogs tried, but there was a vulnerability about them which made them hold back. Not so with Deborah. OK, so her name didn’t exactly thrill me – I’d had a bad experience with a Debs at school – but that didn’t matter in this case. I could just sense, in the home, looking at this most awesome fast dog, that here as the bitch for us.

Deborah had been put in the home after she had attacked her owner at home. The attack wasn’t Deborah’s fault, it was all the owner’s. He’d done a serious of loft conversions for people and had always taken Debs with him. The problem was that the man was clumsy, and every so often he would drop his ladder or hammer and freak Deborah out. On this last occasion it hit Deborah’s front-right paw and she gave the man what for. I couldn’t blame her.

Rescuing Debs from the home was the most awesome and best thing I have ever done. She runs fast, she loves a game of ball and she’s amazingly good at sleeping (for up to 14 hours per day).

If those aren’t the traits of an awesome dog then I don’t know what are!

Growing up in the 1980s, being awesome was about wearing a shell-suit – pink and purple had to feature or you were out of the gang – and listening to Chesney Hawkes. There were a number of other factors which figured in being cool, of course, but we won’t go into that here (because not only might you not understand them if you can’t remember the 1980s, but I might start to cry with the nostalgia of it all…).

But if I’d have grown up 10 years earlier, or 50 years earlier, being awesome and cool would have been completely different, of course. For my dad, being cool and awesome was about meeting his workmates down the pub and arm wrestling – a popular past time for any man who worked at his Sign manufacturer firm – and nothing to do with shell-suits. So it just goes to show, being awesome has changed through the ages. The difference being that in many cases people weren’t even aware of what awesome was…because before that word was invented it was just a feeling…

I realised that I had been left behind in the world of awesome again…that it was evolving at a rate far faster than I could have ever kept up with!

Nowadays, the being awesome experienced by the young is alien to me in no small way; sometimes I accept this, and sometimes, more often than not, I rebel against and try and bring myself up to speed. And I mean alien as if I’d just dropped in from a time-travel adventure. This was illustrated to me in a very cruel and obvious way on the London Underground just last Monday:

I took the rare opportunity to sit down on a seat and found myself perched next to a mother with her two children. The mother then reached into her bag and pulled out an electronic device which I soon recognised as an ipad. It helped that one of the children was saying “I want to go on the ipad”.

I then witnessed the children squabble over the ipad and proceed to use it in a faster, better and more efficient way than I EVER COULD. This was when I realised that I had been left behind in the world of awesome again…that it was evolving at a rate far faster than I could have ever kept up with!

Terrifying in every sense of the word, I can tell you.

Who knows if I will ever catch up with the new-fangled awesomeness of the young. But one thing is certain: I must try, less I become a lost cause with no hope of ever holding onto my favourite ever A word.

1) Look at the charity shops which don’t get all the attention: everyone wants to go to the popular charity shops, but, you guessed it, this means they tend to sell out of stuff quicker. Much quicker. The other places, though, well, they usually have a lot of stock kicking around which you will love. You’ll never find it if you don’t give them a chance, though.

2) You don’t need to stay in your city or even your country: take me for example – up until last month I had literally no idea that Germany had so many cool charity shops. But man, they do, and they’re just as good if not better than the UK too. For some reason, they also seem to be much more funky on the continent, too, which means that you can find stuff which you’d really struggle with in England.

3) Put an ad on Gumtree: looking for vintage clothing, or something like that. Yes you’ll probably get emails from people wanting to sell you a couch roll or something else that’s useless, but you’re also sure to get messages from people who have cool stuff to give you, often for free! Now, you can’t say fairer than that, can you?

Take the romantic comedy for example. Boy and girl in the supermarket. Adam has just broken up with his girlfriend and is down – you can see that another relationship is the very LAST thing he needs. Then he bumps into Julie, who is complex and still in a relationship…only she doesn’t tell Adam about this, and before long we have funny gags all round and…well, more of the same romantic nonsense we’ve seen a hundred times before.

Now, much as I hate copycat romantic films like this, the weird thing is that it DOES happen. This precise cliché happened to a friend of mine just last week, and he is now living out a full cliché life. The only part of it that differs from the film is that this one has no end credits.

So who knows? Perhaps the trampled-upon cliché actually does have a lot of good and honesty about it? One thing is for sure: you can’t escape the cliché. It doesn’t matter if you live in Norfolk and only drink Apple Cider Vinegar or if you come from Florida and are always smiling. That’s just the way the world is, I suppose.
