Anti-Social Networking.

Social Networking is big business these days. Just about anyone who is anyone can be found on Facebook, Bebo, My Space or somewhere similar. You can chat to one another, share your photographs or arrange a party; it’s no wonder why these sites are so popular amongst modern teenagers.
But there can be a darker side to it all. Social Networking sites can also be terrible places for cyber-bullying, hate campaigns and general poisonous gossip. They can be instrumental in the break-up of friendships or relationships and will often attract some rather undesirable characters… Another danger of these websites is that visitors can spend so much time ‘checking their status’ that they will neglect their duties/friendships/relationships in the real world.
So, should we be involved with them at all? Well, if they are used properly, these sites can be incredibly useful. Anyone with relatives living hundreds or thousands of miles away will tell you what a Godsend they are for keeping in touch. And it’s okay to have a natter with your friends online every so often. Social Networking websites will normally only cause problems if people are spending too long on them. The problem is that they can be incredibly addictive; especially if you are lacking in confidence or self-esteem. They are an attractive escape route for the shy or withdrawn.
Like everything else, Social Networks are fine to use in moderation. As for being plagued by nasty or shady characters; you should always give out a minimum amount of personal information. There are plenty of dangers on the internet itself, but it doesn’t mean that everyone should just stop using it. If someone is making your life an absolute misery through one of these websites, then get in touch with its administrators. And if this does not work then simply unsubscribe; it may be annoying, but you can always re-register under a new name and send out explanations to your friends.
The bottom line is this; be in control of your Social Networking habits, do not let them and their silly advertising banners rule you!
