Best Music Vids – The Prodigy.

‘Breathe’ by The Prodigy is a rather edgy video. It’s fun to watch, but the possible themes behind it all are quite dark. I don’t think that anyone knows exactly what it’s about. Is it to do with drugs? Does it centre on confrontation (and the buzz it can give you)? It may even be talking about some strange and dangerous sex game. Or perhaps it merely revolves around how to not get on with your neighbours.
It seemed that The Prodigy were on a real Neo-Punk/Dance trip when they released their ‘The Fat of the Land’ album. It was loud, nasty and anti-social; just like a bad case of spontaneous projectile acne. We had already witnessed the spectacle of ‘Firestarter’ with its stark black and white photography, and ‘Breathe’ had that same scary and anarchistic feel. Although, the difference with ‘Breathe’ was that Keef didn’t keep doing ‘that thing’ with his head. In short, you can sit and watch ‘Breathe’ without developing any psychosomatic symptoms of whiplash.
Photography-wise, this video is very impressive. It’s bleak, it’s dirty and it shows the perils of not cleaning your sink on a regular basis. The whole thing is rich with rather disturbing shots of millipedes on books and a crocodiles in beds (yes, really). There are even hints of voodoo, bestiality and bad plastering!
This may not be the kind of thing to put on when your nana has popped round for a spot of lunch, but it does make for compelling viewing. The dirty, insistent beat of the song is perfectly carried across into the visuals. The whole thing will have most people tapping along with their feet within a minute or so.
If you enjoy watching horror movies then you will probably love this. It has that same ‘I-really-don’t-want-to-watch-this-but-I-will’ quality about it all.
So, as you all know, it is my birthday soon and in case you are pondering what to buy me (that means you Linda) I have been looking at that dvd set for Columbo, just in case you couldn’t think of anything…
